Arthur Washburn Severance, 19, student, died attempting to save Alice E. Small, 14, from drowning, North Truro, Massachusetts, July 29, 1922. While bathing in the Atlantic Ocean, Alice was swept from her feet and carried away from shore by a strong undertow and waves that were four to six feet high. She called for help, and Severance waded and swam about 35 feet from shore, but the water was so turbulent with strong cross currents that he was drowned without having rendered any aid. 22689-1853
