Ashby B. Paul attempted to save Charles J. Hammer, Jr., from drowning, Aqueduct, Pennsylvania, July 11, 1926. While swimming in the Juniata River, Hammer, 30, engineer’s assistant, was seized with cramp. Paul, 30, engineer, swam 30 feet to him, and Hammer grasped him around the neck. Paul made futile efforts to free himself and was submerged twice in the struggle. A man then swam to them and with great effort separated them and supported Hammer and Paul as he swam 25 feet toward a boat. Paul then recovered self-control and swam 25 feet farther to the boat while the other man swam with Hammer to the boat. 26524-2108
