Augustus C. Anderson, 26, student, died attempting to save William Boyd, 14, from drowning, Jackson, Mississippi, May 8,1909. Anderson, wearing clothing, dived from a rowboat into the Country Club Lake and swam to William, who, unable to swim, had jumped from a sinking boat into water 10 feet deep at a point 60 feet from shore. William caught hold of Anderson, and both went under the surface. Anderson’s arm appeared above the surface a moment later, but neither he nor William came up. When the bodies were recovered, Anderson’s collar was found loosened and one or two buttons at the top of his shirt had been torn off, indicating a struggle had occurred. 3884-520
