Aurelius E. Puller, 24, student, saved Cora H. Stillman, 44, from drowning, Starkville, Mississippi, July 31, 1922. Mrs. Stillman became tired as she was swimming 60 feet from the bank in Country Club Lake, where the water was 15 feet deep. A young man reached her to give aid, but she grasped him and drew him under water, frightening him so that he left her. Puller ran 300 feet to the bank, entered the water with all his clothing on, and swam 60 feet to Mrs. Stillman. She flung both arms around his neck, and both sank, rose, and again sank. Under water, Puller broke loose, and when they rose, Mrs. Stillman seized the back and sleeve of his shirt. Hampered by her hold, Puller swam, towing Mrs. Stillman, about 40 feet toward the bank. An inflated inner tube of an automobile was then taken to them and provided some support as Puller swam to within 10 feet of the bank, where he was able to grasp a branch which was extended by persons on the bank. With its aid Puller and Mrs. Stillman reached the bank. 22756-1827
