Austin Francis Kelly helped to save James A. Fanaras, 12, schoolboy, from drowning, Haverhill, Massachusetts, December 7, 1930. On the bank Kelly, 19, removed his shoes. He walked a few steps on the ice and then jumped on it to break it. He was momentarily submerged and then struck the ice with his arms and broke a way for 30 feet to James. He was in the water for three minutes and was numb and weak. (See case of PATRICK J. FITZGERALD.)
