B. Michael Thompson died attempting to save three men from drowning, Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, August 21, 1986. Three men shouted for help after they were caught by a strong, outflowing current off the beach at Kennington Cove in the Atlantic Ocean. Nearby, Thompson, 18, college student, was alerted to their predicament. He ran into the water and began to swim toward the men before he himself was swept into the current and pulled seaward, past the victims. The three men were saved by others, but Thompson drowned.
