Barbara E. Motta saved Peter Flatten from drowning, Waldwick, New Jersey, January 10, 1980. Peter, 8, was seen in a hole in ice on a brook; and Mrs. Motta, 37, was notified of the situation. She went out on the ice and extended a mop to Peter, who began sinking. Mrs. Motta jumped into the water and lifted Peter, who was unconscious, onto the ice. Others aided Mrs. Motta out of the water and assisted in taking Peter to the bank. He was revived.
