Basil A. Pulise, 16, student, saved Roy Labouchere, 13, farmboy, from drowning, Poultney, Vermont, August 10, 1921. A canoe containing Roy and Basil capsized 80 feet from the shore of St. Catharine Lake, and the two boys were thrown into water 20 feet deep. Roy rose, sank, and came up under the canoe. Basil swam seven feet to Roy, who got free of the canoe and lunged for Basil, but Basil dodged away. Then Basil grasped Roy from behind by the hair and swam slowly 65 feet with him, going under the surface once or twice as he swam. He was very tired as he finally got footing in neck-deep water, and two other boys then helped them to a wharf. 21739-1942
