Benjamin B. Berthiaume rescued Richard D. Green from burning, Columbus, Georgia, March 11, 1993. Green, 41, was asleep in a bedroom of a friend’s house when, at night, fire broke out in the room across the hall. He collapsed ot the floor of the living room while attempting to flee the one-story house. A next-door neighbor, Berthiaume, 37, foundry melting supervisor, was alerted to the fire, then was informed by the friend that Green was still inside the burning house. Berthiaume entered the living room twice but was forced out both times by dense smoke and intense heat. He returned to his house for a flashlight, then went back to the scene and entered the living room again. Guided by Green gasping, Berthiaume crawled into the living room, found Green, who was unconscious, and, grasping him by the arms, dragged him from the house. Green required hospitalization for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation. Berthiaume also sustained smoke inhalation, from which he recovered. 67669-7811
