Benjamin H. Clark, 23, laborer, saved Robert A. Doerr, 15, student, from drowning, Aurora, Indiana, January 19, 1916. Robert broke through the ice on South Hogan Creek, 200 feet from wadable water, where the water was 20 feet deep. Several young men started to the rescue but broke through into shallow water and returned to shore. Clark, taking a board with him, then skated 420 feet from shore toward Robert. It was dark, and the ice was somewhat rotten and very weak in spots. From a point 20 feet from Robert, Clark shoved the board to him. Robert seized it, but the ice broke when he tried to climb out with its aid, and Robert sank under the surface. Clark then threw himself forward and slid over the ice on his stomach. He seized the end of the board, to which Robert clung, and worked himself back to a point 25 feet from the hole, drawing the board and Robert after him. Robert was unable to stand, and Clark helped him to shore. Clark suffered from a cold, but both he and Robert recovered. 16003-1290
