Benjamin Smith saved Hattie B. Phipps from being killed by a train, Cincinnati, Ohio, March 14, 1917. Miss Phipps, 32, walked on a track on which a detached car was approaching at a speed of 10 m.p.h. Smith, 36, car cleaner, shouted and ran 50 feet to Miss Phipps, who was unaware of her danger. He put one foot six inches outside the rail of the track and kept the other foot on the station platform, and leaning forward, he grasped Miss Phipps at the chest and stepped back on the platform, jerking Miss Phipps after him. Some part of the car, which was running at undiminished speed, struck the lower part of Miss Phipps’s back, but she was not hurt seriously. 17780-1381
