Bernard Anthony Belles, 10, schoolboy, saved James P. Morris, 12, from drowning,, Sandy Lake, Pennsylvania, July 20, 1966. While swimming in an abandoned sand pit, James got into difficulty in water seven feet deep 30 feet from the bank. He was submerged briefly and called for help. Bernard dived from a diving board and surfaced 20 feet from it. He swam 25 feet farther to James, who had been submerged several times and was floundering wildly. James kicked Bernard’s abdomen and thigh. Bernard told James to hold him around the neck. From behind James threw his arms around the neck of Bernard, who then towed him 18 feet to wadable water. Others aided James to the bank.
