Bernardino Flores, Jr.died after helping to save Charles A. Woodard from drowning, Abilene, Texas, June 2, 1983. Charles, 9, was wading in shallow water in Lake Fort Phantom Hill when he stepped over a drop-off into 18 feet of water and floundered, then submerged. Flores, 20, roofer, ran to the lake and entered it fully clothed. He reached the area where Charles had gone under, then pulled Charles to the surface and swam a short distance to where he could pass Charles to another man. Flores then submerged. Charles was taken to the bank, where he was revived. Flores drowned.
