Bernave Vigil saved Teresa R. Montoya and William A. Bowers, Jr., from being struck by a train, Springer, New Mexico, May 4, 1948. Teresa, 2, and William, 3, played on a track on which a passenger train was approaching at a speed of 63 m.p.h. Vigil, 31, truck driver, ran 100 feet to the children, reaching them when the locomotive was 80 feet distant. Vigil lifted Teresa, who sat between the rails; and William, who stood a foot from the rail, and pivoting, he carried the children four feet from the track, barely clearing the locomotive which passed them at unreduced speed. 41411-3564
