Bert L. Sanders, 46, plant patrolman, saved Jack A., 2, and Shirley A. Carpenter, 4, from being killed by a train, Kokomo, Indiana, March 6, 1943. Jack’s foot became caught at a guard-rail of a track on which a passenger train was approaching at a speed of 30 m.p.h. His sister Shirley, who was between the rails, tried to pull him free. Sanders ran 115 feet to the children, lifted them, but lost hold of Shirley. Again getting hold of Shirley, he jerked the children upward, freeing Jack. He then ran carrying them from the track, clearing the path of the locomotive when it was six feet from him. The train passed at unreduced speed. 39837-3340
