Bessie A. Vannah, 16, student, attempted to save Frank C. Delano, 11, from drowning, Winslows Mills, Maine, January 22, 1913. Frank broke through the ice on Medomak River at a point 15 feet from the nearest bank, where the water was eight feet deep. Bessie, who could not swim, went 50 feet across the ice from the opposite bank with a stick five feet long, and when she was 10 feet from the hole, she crawled on her hands and knees. From a point five feet from the hole she pushed the stick to Frank, and he grasped it. With Bessie’s aid he got one knee up on the ice, and then his sister ran to Bessie’s side, and the ice broke. Both girls fell into the water. When they came up, they clung to the ice until men reached them with boards and lifted them from the water. Frank was drowned. 10111-975
