Billy B. Hughes attempted to save Ezra J. Rohrbach and saved Elmer Kallis from drowning, Clinton, Montana, August 9, 1933. While swimming in the Missoula River, Rohrbach, 20, farmer, got into distress in water 20 feet deep at a point 40 feet from the bank. From wadable water Billy, 14, schoolboy, swam 20 feet to Rohrbach, and Rohrbach grasped his wrist. Billy tried to swim toward the bank but was repeatedly submerged by Rohrbach, whose hold he was unable to break. Rohrbach finally released his hold and sank. Billy then saw Elmer, 12, schoolboy, threshing feebly 20 feet from him. He swam 15 feet and dived to Elmer, who was sinking. He grasped his hair and towed him as he swam 10 feet to the bank. Elmer was unconscious but was revived. Rohrbach drowned. 33340-2773
