Blaine M. Chetwood saved Christina S. and Stacey L. Patterson and attempted to save J. Scott and Stephen Patterson from burning, Blue Ash, Ohio, November 30, 1983. Christina, 5, and Stacey, 3, were in their home when fire broke out in a second-floor bedroom. Chetwoodl 47, paramedic, ran to the house, entered, and found Christina near the top of the stairs leading to the second floor. After removing her from the house, he reentered and found Stacey in a downstairs room and took her outside. Chetwood then climbed the steps to the second floor in search of Scott, 2, and Stephen, 1, but he had to return to the first floor because of dense smoke and intense heat. Finding a blanket, which he wrapped around his head for protection, he returned to the second floor and crawled to the bedroom where he believed the boys to be located. Intolerable heat, smoke, and flame conditions forced him back. Chetwood recovered from smoke inhalation. Scott’s and Stephen’s bodies were later found by firefighters.
