Bobby G. Price, 15, schoolboy, died attempting to save Robert E. Montgomery, 16, schoolboy, from drowning, Niota, Tennessee, May 15, 1949. While wading in a pond in which wadable water extended only nine feet from the bank, Robert, who could not swim, slipped into water 14 feet deep and rose flailing his arms 15 feet from the bank. Bobby, who could swim only 20 feet, waded and swam to Robert, the latter immediately grasping him around the neck with both hands. They sank and rose together twice, moving five feet farther from the bank. Other boys on the bank began calling for aid and attracted a man who was nearby. Fully clothed and wearing heavy boots, the man waded 55 feet along the bank and then swam 11 feet toward Bobby and Robert. Bobby freed himself and moved two feet from Robert as the man reached them. Impeded by his boots, the man took hold of Robert and towed him with difficulty to the bank, Robert becoming unconscious. Bobby sank and did not reappear. The man left Robert at the bank and, after removing his clothing and boots, swam to where Bobby had sunk. He tried three times but was unable to locate him. The man, tired and winded, returned to the bank. Bobby’s body was recovered 45 minutes later. Robert was revived. 3646-41718
