Bobby Lee Carter attempted to rescue Aline B. Weaver from burning, Newport News, Virginia, July 20, 1977. When fire broke out at night in a two-story frame dwelling, Carter, 30, mason-carpenter, learned that Miss Weaver, 55, was somewhere inside the house. With a dampened blanket over his head, Carter, who was wearing only cut-off trousers, entered the dwelling and ran through several first-floor rooms, in all of which he could see the glow of flames in the dense smoke. Carter lost the blanket and was burned by the intense heat. Unable to locate Miss Weaver, he ran from the dwelling, most of which then was afire. Firemen found the charred body of Miss Weaver on the second floor. Carter recovered after hospitalization for extensive burns. 55912-6296
