Brendan T. Elliott helped to save Ian MacLean from burning, Victoria, British Columbia, May 18, 1994. MacLean, 44, was semi-conscious in the kitchen of his fifth-floor apartment after fire broke out in the bedroom and filled the apartment with dense smoke. Another resident of the building, Elliott, 43, college student, responded to the burning apartment and gained access to it. After another man located MacLean in repeated entries into the apartment, during which he was forced out by smoke, Elliott entered the apartment repeatedly but also was forced out by smoke. He entered again, went to the kitchen, and grasped MacLean. The other man joined him, and together they dragged MacLean from the apartment. MacLean sustained smoke inhalation and was hospitalized overnight. He recovered. Elliott sustained minor smoke inhalation and recovered the next day.
