Brian E. Weldon saved David Schiller from drowning, Tamarac, Florida, July 7, 1987. Schiller, 67, was trapped in his car after it left the highway, entered a canal, and began to sink. Witnessing the accident, Weldon, 25, ran to the canal and saw Schiller inside the car. Weldon immediately dived into the canal and swam to the car. He grasped Schiller’s hand through an open window and held it as the car submerged and came to rest on the floor of the canal. With no visibility under water, Weldon entered the car to his waist, grasped Schiller, and pulled him out of the car through the window. They surfaced, and Weldon then swam, Schiller in tow, to the bank, where others helped to remove Schiller from the canal. Schiller was hospitalized for his injuries.
