Brian Mervyn Clegg helped to rescue Sally C. Irwin, Yvonne Kason, and Gerald J. Krushenski from exposure, Kenora, Ontario, March 28, 1979. When an airplane piloted by Krushenski, 30, broke through ice on the Lake of the Woods, he and Miss Kason, 35, managed to swim to the bank; but Mrs. Irwin, 44, who could not swim, clung to the ice in deep water. In very adverse flying conditions, Clegg, 22, pilot, accompanied by another man, took his helicopter to the scene and lowered the aircraft above Mrs. Irwin. From a position on the skids, the other man secured a hold on Mrs. Irwin but found she was already too stiff to be put into the helicopter. He held Mrs. Irwin on the skids as Clegg piloted the helicopter to a hospital. With no improvement in conditions, Clegg and the other man returned to the scene, took Miss Kason and Krushenski aboard, and transported them to the hospital.
