Bruce A. Young, 47, assistant superintendent of department, saved Ezra Aranoff and Sidney Richter, 11 and 8, respectively, from drowning, Chicago, Illinois, March 5, 1938. Ezra and Sidney broke through thin ice on a lagoon into water 10 feet deep 90 feet from the bank, and Ezra was submerged. From the bank Young, who was clothed, waded 15 feet, breaking mushy ice, and then swam 75 feet through a channel of open water to the boys. Diving slightly, he pulled Ezra, who was unconscious, to the surface. Holding Ezra and Sidney, who was dazed, with one hand, Young then swam about 40 feet toward the bank. Being dazed and tired, he then called for help. A young man waded from the bank and swam to Young and towed him and the boys to wadable water. The boys were carried to the bank and were revived. Young was aided from the water and was so benumbed be could not stand
