Burney Veenstra, 24, woodcarver, saved Julius A. Bockheim, 21, clerk, from drowning, Grand Haven, Michigan, July 4, 1929. Bockheim and two companions were swimming in Lake Michigan and were unable to return to shore because of a very strong current. After several attempts had been made by others to take a boat out, Veenstra against the pleadings of his wife rowed the boat through very rough water to Bockheim. In the meantime, Bockheim’s companions were drowned. The waves were six feet high, and much water was shipped as Bockheim got hold of and later climbed into the boat. Although the boat almost swamped, Veenstra with great effort kept it headed against the waves until it was carried to shore by the waves. 29427-2402
