Burton Dake Floyd, 19, student, saved Ruth V., 11, and attempted to save Robert P. Davis, 9, from drowning, Lakewood, Ohio, July 7, 1920. Ruth and Robert were swimming in Lake Erie and were carried by a strong undertow 120 feet from shore, where the water was seven feet deep. The water was rough, and the waves were four feet high. Ruth got hold of Robert and attempted to swim with him, but they were separated by a wave, which took Robert 10 feet from Ruth. She called for help, and Floyd and another young man swam to them. Floyd grasped Ruth and swam 55 feet with her and then waded with her to shore. Hearing that Robert had not been rescued, Floyd, who was winded and weak, waded from shore and swam 65 feet to the point he had seen Robert. He dived several times but could not locate Robert and returned to shore. Robert was drowned. 20558-1659
