Burton W. Jackson, 16, schoolboy, saved Samuel A. Tome, 14, schoolboy, from drowning, North Girard, Pennsylvania, September 11, 1921. Samuel, having an inner tube of an automobile tire, dived from a diving tower into deep water in Lake Erie about 165 feet from shore. He lost the tube at once and attempted to swim but swallowed water, became frightened, and threshed violently. Burton jumped from the tower and swam to Samuel, approaching him from behind. As Burton reached Samuel, the latter turned and grasped Burton and bore him under water. Burton broke Samuel’s hold, rose, and got hold of Samuel, who had become semiconscious. He swam with Samuel toward shore, twice losing his hold, but he reached wadable water after swimming 46 feet and then dragged Samuel to shore. 22369-1795
