C. Allan Arrington saved Michael L. Webb from burning, Greeneville, Tennessee, February 12, 1984. Michael, 17, sat unconscious and pinned behind the steering wheel of a truck that caught fire following a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer. Arrington, 28, a truck driver who was operating the tractor- trailer, was injured in the accident but leapt from his cab and ran to the burning truck. While flames fed on leaking gasoline from the truck’s fuel line and approached its fuel tank, Arrington wrenched open the driver’s door with great difficulty. Using one hand to lift the steering wheel and the other to tug on Michael, Arrington freed him and dragged him to safety moments before flames enveloped the cab. Both Michael and Arrington recovered from their injuries.
