C. Bert Raymond, 16, office boy, died saving Hershel F. Shelby, 12, from drowning, Indianapolis, Indiana, June 10, 1911. Hershel was wading in Fall Creek where the water was shallow, while Bert, a poor swimmer, swam in deep water ten feet from him. Hershel stepped into the deep water and, as he went down, called for help. When he came up, he heard Bert telling him to hold him, and he climbed up on Bert’s shoulders, forcing Bert beneath the surface. Other boys made efforts to get Hershel off Bert’s back but were unsuccessful, and Bert was drowned. Hershel was gotten to shore in safety. 8272-670
