C. Eldsworth Carlson saved Gail E. Bartholomew from drowning, Coupeville, Washington, May 31, 1915. Gail, 15, who could not swim, fell from a launch that was running 10 m.p.h. and went beneath the surface in Penn Cove a half-mile from the nearest shore, where the water was 70 feet deep. Carlson, 19, clerk, threw off his coat and jumped into the water when the launch was 100 feet from Gail. He swam to her and was near her when she went under the surface the third time. She became unconscious and did not come up. Carlson reached down and grasped her shoulder with one hand, and she grasped the sleeve of his other arm and pulled him slightly beneath the surface. He trod water to keep at the surface with her. The launch was turned, and it reached Carlson about five minutes after the accident. He and Gail were pulled on board, and Gail was revived. 14862-1073
