C. Ericsson Tripp, 22, clerk, died attempting to save Joseph A. Hutton, 21, barber, from drowning, New Milford, Connecticut, August 1, 1915. Hutton’s legs became cramped while he was swimming in the Housatonic River, and he went beneath the surface in water over 10 feet deep at a point 35 feet from the bank. Tripp, a very ordinary swimmer, who was standing on a submerged rock 10 feet from Hutton, shouted for help and swam to Hutton. Hutton put his hand on Tripp’s shoulder, and Tripp swam about five feet with him. Hutton then lost his hold and went beneath the surface. Tripp grasped Hutton with one hand and supported him for a minute, then he seemed to suffer from an attack of heart failure. He released his hold on Hutton, and both went beneath the surface. They came up, and other men took Hutton to the bank. He was then unconscious. When Hutton was being taken to the bank, Tripp went beneath the surface and did not reappear. His body was recovered 45 minutes later. Hutton was revived. 15204-1190
