C. Frederick Larrabee, 40, farmer, saved Henry L. Layman, 40, farmer, from drowning, Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, April 16, 1913. A horse Layman was driving became frightened, went over a high bank into the Susquehanna River, and swam toward midstream. Layman, who could not swim, was dragged along under water to a point 90 feet from the bank, where he became free and rose. Larrabee saw the accident and swam, fully dressed, to Layman. Layman, who was injured and dazed, seized Larrabee, and Larrabee swam shoreward, calling for help. He was drawn under the surface once or twice by Layman’s weight and was nearly exhausted when he reached a wadable point 30 feet from the bank. 10436-1228
