C. Raymond Shook died attempting to save Michael N. Jury from drowning, Islamorada, Florida, September 5, 1970. At night, Jury, 22, machinist, was fishing from a bridge and fell into the Gulf of Mexico 1,000 feet from shore. A poor swimmer, he called for help as the current carried him away from the bridge. Shook, 52, road equipment supervisor, jumped from the bridge into the water, swam to Jury, and took hold of him. Two boats anchored nearby were alerted. When they arrived, they found Jury and Shook about 100 feet apart. Both were inert. Jury was revived, but Shook was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital.
