Caldwell W. Smither attempted to save Everett C. Sims from drowning, New River, Tennessee, July 5, 1926. Sims, 21, flooring grader, waded from an island in the New River and stepped into water eight feet deep. He struggled at a point 50 feet from the bank, and deep water extended to within five feet of the bank. Smither, 22, cashier, swam 30 feet to Sims. Sims struggled with him. They went under the surface several times, and Smither was unable to swim with Sims. Finally Smither, who was becoming dazed, broke Sims’s hold and swam 75 feet at an angle to a snag near the bank. He was assisted to the bank in a semiconscious condition and was ill for several days. Sims was drowned. 26821-2132
