Calvin S. Orth, 29, electrician, saved Angelo Gughiocello, 10, from drowning, South Renovo, Pennsylvania, December 2, 1924. While playing on the ice on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, Angelo broke through where the water was 16 feet deep. He became unconscious. Orth ran to a point seven feet from the hole, and as the ice broke, he plunged and swam a few feet to Angelo. Orth repeatedly tried to climb out of the hole with Angelo and then called for a rope. A rope was brought and tossed to Orth, and he and Angelo were pulled out after Orth had been in the hole 10 minutes. He sustained cuts and bruises on his arms and chest. Angelo was revived. 24909-2037
