Carl Alfred Swanson rescued Richard H. Miller from a perilous fall, Pleasantville, Pennsylvania, March 15, 1978. From a height of 65 feet, Miller, 35, attempted to slide down a greased pipe on a drilling rig but was unable to control his speed of descent and rapidly approached the wood and steel platform at the base of the derrick. Swanson, 26, derrickman, ran to a position on the platform to break Miller’s fall. Miller struck Swanson and knocked him down. Both men required hospitalization: Miller for a back injury and Swanson for leg injuries including a dislocated knee and nerve damage. 56175-6348
