Carl B. Warren, 28, farmer and blacksmith, died attempting to save Rupert E. Tobey, 5, from drowning, Vassalboro, Maine, May 19, 1912. Rupert and his father, neither of whom could swim, and Warren and a companion were in a sailboat on Webber Pond. When 300 feet from the bank and while the wind was blowing in strong gusts and the waves were running two to three feet high, Rupert fell overboard into water 12 feet deep. Warren, who was heavily dressed, and his companion immediately jumped from the boat, and Warren reached the child and took him on his back. The boat ran on before the wind, as Rupert’s father did not know how to handle it. Warren’s companion swam toward the boat and reached it with much difficulty after 10 minutes’ effort. In the meantime, Warren and Rupert had sunk and drowned. Their bodies were recovered later. 8585-708
