Carl Baer, 20, chain quiller, helped to save Alexander Gorski, 7, from drowning, Clinton, Massachusetts, February 13, 1915. Alexander broke through weak ice on the Nashua River, where the water was 12 feet deep. Baer went out and tried to pull him out by the hand, but the ice broke and let Baer fall into the water. Alexander flung his arms around Baer’s neck, but Baer broke his hold and grasped him around the waist. Baer made repeated efforts to get himself and Alexander out, but the ice broke and prevented it. Another young man came and pulled Alexander out by the hand, but he broke in in an effort to pull Baer out. Baer and the other young man were later rescued by skaters with hockey sticks. Baer was disabled for two weeks, but neither Alexander nor the other young man was seriously affected. 14449-1329
