Carl Knopp died attempting to save Albert C. Kratzke from suffocation, Cleveland, North Dakota, July 19, 1926. While Kratzke, 26, laborer, was trying to loosen a rock at the bottom of a well 30 feet deep, he was overcome by gas. Knopp, 25, farmer and well driller, had another man lower him on the cable of a drilling machine. Knopp tried to place a chain around Kratzke and then called to the man at the surface to draw them out. When the cable was drawn up, it was discovered that Knopp and Kratzke remained at the bottom. The cable was lowered again, but Knopp soon lost consciousness. When Knopp and Kratzke were removed from the well an hour later, both were dead. 26650-2219
