Carl L. Sullivan attempted to save Elizabeth C. Short from drowning, Canton, New York, May 24, 1913. Elizabeth, 14, who could not swim, fell while wading in water 30 feet below a dam in the De Grasse River and was carried a few feet to deep water that flowed swiftly and was turbulent. Carl, 13, schoolboy, who was dressed, jumped into the water from a rock, and he and Elizabeth grasped each other. The current carried them downstream, rolling them over and over on the bottom a distance of 90 feet. Here a man had waded 10 feet from the bank with difficulty, and he caught the children. They were stunned, but they recovered. 15057-1074
