Carl S. Knutsen saved Alice K. and Helen E. Holm and attempted to save David L. Barnett from drowning, Fargo, North Dakota, May 18, 1941. A canoe in which Knutsen, 24, student, and the others were riding in the Red River of the North overturned in water eight feet deep 20 feet from the bank. Knutsen, who was fully clothed and suffered from a heart disorder, got hold of Alice, 20, and swam towing her 15 feet to wadable water. He then swam 15 feet to Helen, 23, and Barnett, 24, student, who were holding to each other and were just below the surface. Taking hold of Barnett’s hair, Knutsen lifted his head above the surface. Barnett took hold of Knutsen’s shoulder; and Helen, releasing Barnett, threw both arms around Knutsen’s waist. Knutsen and Barnett were submerged, Barnett releasing hold of Knutsen. Releasing Barnett’s hair, Knutsen rose to the surface; and Barnett sank. Breaking Helen’s hold on himself, Knutsen swam towing her 15 feet to wadable water. Then swimming to the point at which Barnett had sunk, Knutsen submerged twice but did not find him. He then swam to the bank and was fatigued. Barnett was drowned. 39025-3214
