Caroline S. Bassett saved Mary F. Stockton from drowning, Brownsburg, Pennsylvania, July 31, 1919. Mary, 15, attempted to swim across a canal 45 feet wide but became winded and let down to touch bottom in deep water 15 feet from the bank. She lost self-control. Caroline, 13, schoolgirl, swam about 18 feet to her and, taking hold of Mary’s bathing suit, started to swim with her. Mary then put both hands on Caroline’s shoulders and caused both to go under the surface. Caroline freed herself but retained her own hold, and, not being able to land at the nearer bank because of a wall, she swam 30 feet with Mary to wadable water at the opposite bank. 19976-1747
