Carolyn L. Wallace saved John L. Wray from drowning, Big Bear Lake, California, February 19, 1972. When a boat capsized in a lake, John, 5, was thrown into deep water, where he flailed wildly. Miss Wallace, 27, policewoman, was attracted and entered the cold water without delaying to remove her heavy boots. She swam to John, who then was 60 feet from the bank, and succeeded in calming him. By the time Miss Wallace had towed John to a wadable depth, she was nearly incapacitated by the cold water. Both she and John recovered.
