Carrie Bashlin, 25, waitress, saved Herman E. Lewis, 24, hotel clerk, from drowning, Rockland, Maine, August 4, 1909. Miss Bashlin waded and swam 50 feet to where Lewis, who could not swim, was struggling in Rockland Harbor, where the water was over six feet deep. Lewis grasped her and pulled her under the surface, but she freed herself and, towing him after her, swam 15 feet to wadable water. 4056-589
