Carrie M. Combe, 38, housewife, saved Cora S. Ogden and Homer T. and Josephine B. Wilson and attempted to save three others from burning, San Antonio, Texas, March 26, 1916. Mrs. Combe was on the first floor of a clubhouse when fire was discovered, and she and others were told to leave at once. Flames and heavy smoke were entering the first story from the basement. Mrs. Combe ascended a stairway to a hall that extended the length of the second story, entered a room occupied by Mrs. Ogden and another woman, and urged them to leave immediately. Mrs. Ogden escaped, but the other woman went to warn her son and was burned to death. Mrs. Combe went to another room and warned a man and his wife, but they failed to leave immediately and were burned to death. She entered the room of the Wilsons and urged them to flee without waiting for clothing. Flames were then entering the hall outside the room of the Wilsons. The Wilsons and Mrs. Combe made their way along the dark hall and escaped from the building uninjured. Flames were occasionally sweeping across the stairway and doorway that they used in leaving the building, and the roof collapsed a half-minute after Mrs. Combe left the building. 16543-1365
