Carroll A. Davis saved Edith I. Pullen from drowning, Eagle Rock, Virginia, June 27, 1917. Edith, 17, while trying to swim in the James River with the aid of water wings, was carried into deep water and could not swim out. A boy and then a man attempted to rescue her, but she forced both under the surface and they left her. Davis, 35, physician, ran 300 feet, undressed to his underwear, and swam 55 feet to Edith. He took hold of her, and she put an arm around his neck, but he swam 80 feet with her to the bank. 18443-1412
