Cecil Reginald Brown rescued Rebecca A. Williamson from assault, Columbus, Ohio, November 10, 1994. While walking along a residential street, Ms. Williamson, 38, was confronted by a man who seized her, put a gun to her head, and threatened her. From nearby, Brown, 26, youth outreach worker, witnessed the assault. Having been accosted by the man earlier, Brown approached the assailant and Ms. Williamson to intervene. As he neared them, the assailant released Ms. Williamson and approached Brown, making threatening comments. Despite his efforts to calm the assailant, the assailant pointed the gun at Brown and shot him in the lower jaw at close range. Police arrived shortly and apprehended the assailant. Brown was hospitalized nine days for treatment of his gunshot wound, which required surgery.
