Cecil Roy Taylor, Sr., saved Gerrikka L. Taylor from burning, Robersonville, North Carolina, March 24, 1988. Gerrikka, 8 months old, remained strapped in a car seat in the rear seat of a burning, overturned car after a highway accident. Arriving at the scene and learning that she was still inside the car, Taylor, 36, truck driver, who was not related to Gerrikka, entered the compact car on his back through the broken window of the passenger door. He could not free Gerrikka and left the car when a small explosion occurred in the engine area. Obtaining a pocketknife, Taylor re-entered the car through the passenger window and cut the straps securing Gerrikka. He removed her from the seat, slid partway out of the car, and handed her to a bystander before exiting himself.
