Charles A. Biondo helped to save Gregory C. Strychalski from drowning, South Bend, Indiana, February 4, 1973. Gregory, 13, broke through an ice-covered lagoon into deep water. Biondo, 55, college professor, began crawling, toward Gregory and, after breaking through, continued by breaking a path in the ice. Twenty feet from Gregory, Biondo found the ice too thick to break, and he was unable to climb out. A technical school student crawled to Gregory but then fell in. Holding Gregory, he broke a path back to the thick ice 10 feet from Biondo. A ladder was slid to Biondo, who pushed it on to the student. By means of the ladder, Gregory and the student proceeded on the ice to Biondo, who still was in the water. Gregory again fell in. The student entered the water; and he and Biondo then took Gregory to the bank. 53198-6012
