Charles A. Johnson died attempting to save Leo Dietrich from suffocation, East Blackstone, Massachusetts, August 20, 1919. Dietrich, 43, farmer, entered a well about 17 feet deep, too soon after a dynamite blast had been set off in it, and was overcome by gas. Johnson, 32, farmer, was the only person at the well when Dietrich was overcome. After running to Dietrich’s home and calling to the latter’s wife that Dietrich was in the well in need of help, Johnson returned to the well, and Dietrich’s wife went to a neighbor’s for help. Johnson was later found overcome in the well. He and Dietrich were dead when removed. 19867-1788
